Due to a surge in passport applications, apply several months in advance, especially if a visa is needed. The US State Department recommends all cruise ship passengers have their passport with them in case of emergency, even if not required.

Make sure their passport is valid at least six months from trip date and has two or more blank pages. Passports for children under 16 are valid for 5 years and adults for 10 years, so check expiration dates carefully.
